Chapter Nineteen
While knocking at the Woodard’s front door, Adam realized how long it had been since his last visit. The red color on the door seemed a little faded, deeper scratch marks marred the wood and the single nail which held the family’s Christmas wreath was missing. He’d never meant to stay away so long and this thought almost stopped him from knocking again on the door. Before his knuckles could land another blow, Maria Woodard appeared.
“Hola, Mamacita.”
“Adam, miejo.” She smiled broadly, hugging her adopted son to her ample bosom, “It is so good to see you.” Her eyes widened, spying Adam’s new BMW convertible parked in front of the house. “And you have another beautiful car.” She gasped. One of Maria Woodard’s big weaknesses was for fast cars. “You’ll have to take me for a ride in it sometime.” She released him from her death grip, welcoming him inside. “Please, come in, come in.”
He stepped into the cool foyer. Nothing had changed in all the years he’d known Eagle’s family. Perhaps a few new pictures of their grandchildren hung in the picture-lined hallway, but that was all.
“How is your family? Your sister?”
He sighed, “They never change and Michelle is still single.”
Maria nodded gravely, “Don’t worry, miejo, she’ll find a husband one day.”
“Sorry, Mama, I’m not sure she wants one.”
“Ah well, she’s still young.” Suddenly serious, Maria looked up at him. “Eagle is all right, isn’t he?”
Adam frowned. “Why wouldn’t he be all right?”
Maria shrugged. “I worry. His job, you know.”
Smiling, the younger man took her arm to gently lead her down the hall. “No, Mama, he’s fine.”
Placing her hand over his, she patted it lightly. “I am so happy you are joining our family, miejo. I always wanted Eagle to settle down and marry a doctor…or a nurse. Someone who could take care of him when he ends up injured on the job. It’s inevitable, you know? But a doctor psychologist like you is good enough.”
Adam froze. He was almost positive he’d heard Eagle tell him that he’d told his family the truth about Kessler’s plan, but now he wasn’t certain. A tug propelled him forward as he walked with Maria to the kitchen. Again, he stopped, taking in the sight before him.
“You like it, Adam? I decided it was time to come into the twenty-first century with a Southwestern flair, of course.”
An artistic blend of copper, stainless steel and granite had replaced the 1970’s décor. Saltillo tiles still covered the floor, keeping the feel of the past, but they, too, were obviously new and unworn.
Speechless, he whistled his approval and nodded. “This is quite a change, Mama.”
“I designed it.” The small woman glowed with pride.
Leaning down, Adam kissed her on the cheek. “I’ll have to come for dinner more often and see if that fancy new stove can cook as well as the old one.”
“Of course, you will, miejo. You will be my son-in-law soon. You make him so happy. He loves you, you know.”
He frowned, “I don’t know.
